Vladimir Baranov-Rossiné was a complex, curious, multifaceted and versatile artist who skilfully explored a variety of modernist styles – including impressionism, cubism, futurism and synaestheticism – to express his own vision. This figurative painting, Cockerel and Rhubarb, reveals the artist’s witty, humorous side. The forms and colours are simplified yet realistic, foreshadowing several trends of the 1920s. A colourful cockerel, parading before a shy white hen, stands out in his flamboyance against the theatrically comic background of a bunch of rhubarb.
