KWON Yong Rae (b. 1964)

KWON Yong Rae captures the intangible beauty of art through his stainless-steel compositions. While the light functions as the main element, it also imbues the spirit of his art in giving voice to the stainless-steel forms that already exist by themselves. KWON's work, created with intense repetitive labor, embraces the natural force of light that cannot be controlled by man to produce formative shapes. The artist explains himself: “My artwork holds light. It reflects light in ways that embody and make apparent the nature and existence of light itself. This consciousness of light and darkness allows me to experience beauty as I perceive their truth rather than illusion. The colors contribute to a strong energy. Such vibrancy is something that disappears when the light is turned off and is hence an intangible experience, as unforgettable and exhilarating as the memory of one’s first love.”
