KIM Sung Ryong (b. 1962)
Following a health retreat in rural Korea, a new phase in KIM Sung Ryong’s figurative painting began. Away from the buzz of Seoul, this full immersion in nature gave KIM the opportunity to meditate on the surrounding plants and bucolic environment. This experience reflected directly on his new compositions. KIM describes his poetic approach as such: "There isn't much to say about landscapes in fact. Scenery beyond the human kept my attention. I am not looking for a primeval forest. If I see some weeds, I paint them. Paintings come from one's inner world. However, they become rather vague as I continue working on them. I am looking for the spiritual aspects and movements, power and supernatural energy that ordinary things embody.”
