About

SON Munil (b. 1980)

SON Munil uses fabric as the dominant material of his work. He creates ‘anonymous portraits’ made of the texture of the suit, the dropping of the soft fabric, and the layering of the thin fabrics, juxtaposed in geometric shapes. In his Relationship series, the objects partially lose their basic identity through a distortion process. SON models the actual object before painting it with acrylic. The ambiguousness and the unpredictability of these portraits take shape in the three-dimensional images on flat surface. The textiles are given a new purpose in their central role in the artwork. The artist considers this process as a spiritual quest. The mixture of the suit with the geometric shape is all related to his spiritual approach, evocative of the tangible relationship of the cloth to the body. This play on shapes and objects makes one wonder until what extent the fabric can remove individual identity. Genuine yet inexorable approach, elaborate observations about the object and the details are SON Munil’s strength in exploring the ‘spiritual’.
